Today we are talking about New Year’s resolutions and how to make this 2019 a very kick-ass one.
But first.
Compassion. The one thing that makes us human. The ability to show compassion for other people. The ability to treat others kindly is what defines us as people. Treat yourself and others kindly as you are making positive changes in your life. Everyone is going through some kind of battle that we might not be able to see because we are too preoccupied with our own battles. Remember. Compassion. Regardless of what you are going through.
Admission. I have approached this podcast from a wise-ass, preachy, know-it-all kind of way, as if I know everything and have all the answers. And nothing could be farther from the truth. I am not a perfect human being, I make mistakes, I have insecurities, trauma and a lot of things that I need to work on. I don’t know everything. I don’t have all the answers and I am learning just as much as you are from this podcast. Thank you for trusting me enough to value my opinions here though.
So, the podcast is going to take a different direction. As you are making changes and learning something from the podcast, so am I. And we can help each other learn and grow together, side-by-side. We will guide each other into becoming better people by holding hands, as opposed to one pointing in one direction and the other following. Let’s make this a fun journey of self-discovery, where everyone grows including me.
And now..
Your life isn’t gonna change just because the digits on the calendar did.
There is more to the New Year than “New year, New you”. In less than a month, your resolutions will begin to fade into the background and you lose both interest and enthusiasm. Does this sound familiar? To me it does. It’s been me every single year for the most part.
You tell yourself that you will exercise more/quit smoking/becoming rich/control spending habits..
12 months later, you realize that you are nowhere close to those goals than you were at the beginning of the year. Still overweight/unhealthy and broke. So year after year, you keep on writing the same resolutions and last year’s resolutions become this year’s resolutions. That’s happened quite often for me.
Not anymore. No longer.
Let me help you keep your resolution promises to yourself this 2019. In a few minutes I will show how to approach your resolutions so that they actually happen this time around! And together we make this 2019, an amazing one.
Let me help you make your new year’s resolutions ACTUALLY happen this year. Aren’t you sick of spending every New Year regretful and thinking about all the stuff that you could have done… but didn’t? Don’t you deserve to finally have the best year of your life? It’s time for you to make things happen and if you have not already.. then..
You are not alone.
According to the Statistic Brain Institute, 91% of resolutioners will fail on their resolutions during the upcoming year, while a mere 9% will be successful.
The question is.. which group do you want to be part of? The 91% or the 9%?
If you want to be like the 9% then don’t do what the 91% does. Forget what the majority of people do.
Ask anyone what their resolutions are and you will hear:
“I want to get fit.”
“I want to get rich.”
“I want to quit smoking.”
“I want to be a better person.”
You WANT to do something. And it just stops at that. It’s too vague and it’s not specific enough.
To make your resolutions happen this year, follow this simple 4-step-formula Break your goals down into bite-sized chunks.
- Be Specific.
Don’t be general (you ain’t a general in the army. Joke is lame af but it gets the point across well :D)
e.g: instead of saying “I want to get fit.”, say “I want to lose 12kgs. - Give yourself a deadline.
“I want to lose 12 kgs by the end of December 2019.” - Make monthly mini-deadlines.
Then ask yourself how many kilos you need to lose each month
12 kgs/12 months = 1kg/month
Break the months down into weeks
1kg/4 weeks = 0.250 kgs/week
So to lose 12 kgs/year, you have to lose 0.250 kgs/week.
4) Ask yourself. What do I need to do each month/week/day to lose 12kgs?
How many hours of cardio do I need to do and how many calories do I need to consume to accomplish this goal by Dec. 2019?
If you want to go further, you can break it down into days too, which becomes 0.0357 kgs/day ≈ 35 grams (of course losing weight is a gradual process and you cannot lose a specific amount of weight every single day).
The calculations are merely done for illustration purposes to show you how to approach your NY resolutions. The same logic applies to kgs/money/cigarettes/exercise etc.
So this is how you break down a resolution so that it can happen. But this is not enough. You also need to know how to stick to it. Going to the gym for a month or two this way is easy, but what about the other 10 months until the end of year? Huh?
How many times did you make a resolution at the beginning of the year only to realize that you are nowhere close it at the end of the year. I.e. You failed. If you are like most people.. many times.
The commitment is not the important thing here. Deciding to commit to something is easy. Sticking to it is hard.. so you need to look deep within yourself and ask yourself, why is it that I want to make this resolution happen?
Find your why. Why do you want to lose weight (are you actually doing this for you or to fit in with the crowd/people’s approval?) Once you come to the realization that you are doing this for you, that’s when things start happening for you.
Why do you want to become rich? Is it really so you can buy a fancy car so people can validate your ego? Or is it because you want more freedom? That is actually the main reason that people want money. Freedom of choice. Freedom to determine your own life and take your life into your own hands (not a boss or corporation’s) Freedom to travel. Freedom to shop. Freedom to enjoy life whenever, wherever and in whatever way they wish.
Why do you want to stop smoking or drinking alcohol? Because it sucks. And it smells disgusting. And you deserve to put something better into your body than something that can harm it and give you the illusion that it makes you happy, while making you a slave to a substance.
Find your why. Why do you want to do what you want to do? And go beyond surface reasons. Go beyond the surface. There is something much much deeper to everything than you can imagine.
Happy New Year and remember that whatever you are going through, I am here for you.
I love you, Samotination.
